Unit Overview
Islam is one of the world's most practiced religion, with over one billion followers. The cultural, artistic, and scientific contributions of Muslims continue to impact our daily lives even thousands of years later. In addition, understanding Islam is relevant to the global conversations on equality, tolerance, politics, and economics. This unit will look at the rise of Islam as a foundation of information so students can understand the religion's origins and beliefs. The spread of Islam to such a high degree was the result of the Arab Empire, ruled by Muslims. Understanding the succession within that Empire of the next several centuries will contribute to student knowledge on why Islam has been so influential. Now, not only did Islam spread with the Arab Empire but so did the culture attached to the religion which the third lesson will have the students researching. After learning about the rise, spread, and cultural influence of Islam the students will have the understanding of the religion to analyze the common misconceptions about the Islamic World that they may have heard or held. Lastly, to put Islam in a larger context students will compare and contrast it to Christianity which is only possible after gaining a complete, comprehensive perspective on the religion.
